Northern Lights Tours

Picture yourself outside on a clear dark night. You notice a faint glow of greenish light stretching across the sky. Then additional bands of light form slowly brightening to form a giant curtains that slowly waves across the sky. The lights change to red and then blue and purple. The entire sky seems to be full of color and motion. Then everything fades into a warm green glow. You have just experienced the Northern Lights.

Early researchers came up with many theories and scientific explanations for the Northern Lights. They wondered if they were reflected firelight from the edge of the world, sunlight reflected from arctic ice, or maybe reflected light from ice crystals high in the sky.

The Northern Lights happen when electrically charged particles speed along the magnetic field lines of the earth into the upper atmosphere and collide with gas atoms. This causes the atoms to give off light. The field lines go into and out of the Earth around the Earth's magnetic poles. This is why the Northern Lights are seen as you get closer to the magnetic North Pole.

The motion of the Northern Lights is caused changing interaction between solar wind and the earth's magnetic field. The solar wind can generate up to 1000,000 megawatts of electricity in a Northern Lights display. This often causes interference with power lines, radio and television broadcasts and satellite communications. By studying the Northern Lights, scientists can learn more about the solar wind and how it affects the earth's atmosphere and how the energy of the Northern Lights might be utilized on Earth.
